‘Masters of Sex’ episode 10 review: This is not a drill
Tonight’s episode of “Masters of Sex” was very much all about one simple concept: What in the world happens when you feel like the world is going to end? At a time when Washington University was plagued by a variety of different drills in the event of a nuclear attack, a number of characters started to feel like their personal worlds were crumbling.
We have to start here with the biggest stunner of the entire episode, and that was the news that Virginia has quit the study, and for a pretty darn good reason. She was never told about Libby’s pregnancy, and the reason why was guilt. Bill wanted to sleep with her, and it was more about having the affair than taking part in any sort of study. Thanks to that, she is now seemingly done with this brand of research, and Bill continues to dwell in the no-friend zone.
Let’s just take a look at all of the people who Bill has managed to infuriate at this point. He hates Ethan over what he did to get Libby pregnant, he barely speaks to the Provost, and never spends any time with his wife. Also, he seems to detest the presence of his mom with a fiery passion.
Elsewhere, Margaret Scully had to deal with the shocking news (at least to her) that her husband was gay, mostly because she could not see the forest through the trees. Everyone else realized this to be the case, but she failed to recognize it. Meanwhile, Ethan has the challenge of not having a job anymore thanks to Bill, and Austin had an enormous crisis as he learned that one of the participants that he copulated with in the study was pregnant with his child. This story was the saddest of the episode in that it showed a complete disregard for humanity, but it was also the most interesting. Bill is a miserable soul most of the time, and he reminded us of it here; not only that, but there was proof that Austin was just as bad.
With Virginia now taking her employ to a different cause (and one where she can be more appreciated) in fighting cervical cancer, we have ourselves the landscape for the remainder of this season. At least we are heading into the final episodes on a fantastic (if somber) note. Grade: A.
