2013 AMAs winners list: Justin Timberlake, Rihanna among those to take home trophies
While there are approximately three million performances that take place over the course of the American Music Awards, there are actually (gasp!) some awards that are also handed out over the course of the three-hour show. We’ll have some continuous updates on this page throughout the night, along with some analysis of them (when appropriate). Remember that these are voted on by the fans, so it’s unfortunately a little hard to sit here and say that anyone is a controversial victor. (If this was the Grammys, that would be an entirely different story.)
Pop / Rock Male Artist – Justin Timberlake. It’s hard to really argue against any award that Justin wins pretty much the rest of his life. The guy is constantly great, and even his victory speech for the award was pretty priceless.
Soul / R&B Female – Rihanna. Given that she was up in this category against the likes of Ciara and Alicia Keys (who have not had too many mainstream hits of late), this category was almost a lock. Where was the competition here? This was the most predictable award of the entire episode.
Favorite Country Album – Taylor Swift. Hey, Taylor won an award! Where does she keep all of these? How does she even walk in those heels? There are so many questions for Taylor but so little time.
Rap Album – Macklemore and Ryan Lewis. It was personally hilarious that Michael Bolton was co-presenting this award. Really, that happened. These guys have had a crazy year, and they deserved it. They also actually chose to discuss a serious subject in racial profiling in their speech.
Rock Group – Imagine Dragons. A year ago, we had no idea who these guys were. So for them to find a way to get on here and impress with so many hits this year is pretty incredible. Our biggest curiosity now is just if they are going to keep this string of hits going in 2014.
Latin Music – Marc Anthony. A great artist, but how often has Anthony really had a hit this year? It feels like this was largely due to a lack of competitive acts in the genre this year.
Pop / Rock Album – One Direction. Wait, how did Taylor Swift get nominated for a rock album? Somewhere after the show, Harry Styles is going to be moonwalking in his hotel room.
Best New Artist – Ariana Grande. Imagine Dragons got to get their award from Dave Grohl. Ariana got to get her from the dude from “The Bachelor.”
Soul / R&B Artist – Justin Timberlake. Apparently, Justin, like Taylor, qualifies in a number of different categories.
Electronic Artist – Avicii. This was a nice twist from the rest of the night, mostly because the vast majority of it was so predictable in so many ways.
Artist of the Year – Taylor Swift. In the end, we were right back where we started here with Taylor winning another award. This doesn’t make for exciting TV, but it is hard to really argue given the great year that she’s had with so many different singles and successes.
