‘The Tomorrow People’ episode 7 review: Stephen, Astrid, and Cara’s many confessions

The Tomorrow People -After spending about the first month of “The Tomorrow People’s” run on television just thoroughly hating on it time and time again, we’ll at least admit now to there being a part of us that appreciates the direction in which the show is heading. It feels more intense than it did in the early going, and the characters are more defined. Also, for the first time we find ourselves legitimately shipping one of the prospective couples in Stephen and Astrid. She is much more of the normal person who is easy to relate with, while Cara, despite whatever sort of special “connection” that she has to Stephen, is a cheater. You can’t discount that.

Now, we turn to the biggest problem with the Stephen / Cara relationship: In addition to her pledging this week that her fling with Robbie Amell’s character is a one-time thing, it really doesn’t feel like he and Peyton List have any real chemistry together. It feels forced, while with Stephen and Astrid, it’s a little bit more natural and fun. Romance is meant to be awkward, and their could-be love story is.

Away from the romance, this story brought in an element of something that felt realistic to a high-schooler: Stephen using his powers to be good at basketball. Then, Ultra came out and sucked all of the fun right out of what he was doing. The idea of him still working to take out a rapist and a very bad dude without powers was admirable, but how dumb does he really take this organization for? Sooner or later, he’s going to get himself caught with all of the excuses that he’s making. He has really only survived this far thanks to luck and coincidence, and sooner or later, he is going to need to develop a little bit of skill in the process.

So overall, this is a pretty fun episode of the show, even if the pushing of Stephen and Cara together is pretty “meh.” After a weak start, “The Tomorrow People” is starting to come around. Grade: B-.
