ABC’s ‘Scandal’ season 3 spoilers: Khandi Alexander promises more Olivia, Maya backstory
At the end of Thursday night’s “Scandal” season 3 episode, we had a shocker to really end all shockers: Not only is Olivia Pope’s mother Maya still alive, but she has been imprisoned by none other than Olivia’s own father Rowan. That’s quite a bizarre situation, and you have to ask a few questions to go along with. For example, why is this happening, and how much about Olivia’s past does Maya really know about? The only thing that is confirmed thus far is that Maya seems to know that Olivia is out there somewhere, and she wants to make a meeting happen.
Khandi Alexander is going to be playing the character in the episodes ahead, and she explains to TVLine that while you are going to see some flashbacks about her time in prison, you are at least going to also understand more about what Maya’s relationship with Olivia was really like:
“We’re going to learn more about Olivia’s relationship with her mother, and what’s happened in the past … Very few mothers don’t love their daughters.”
This is the sort of story that is probably not going to be resolved anytime soon, mostly because there are so many other issues that Olivia has to take care of, including the Josie campaign and trying to get to the bottom of Operation Remington. Given that there are so many other layers that need to be unraveled before Olivia even figures out about her mom, we’ll be stunned if Shonda Rhimes decides to lift the veil of this story anytime in the near future. What will be interesting here is getting the opportunity to be in possession of some more information pertaining to Olivia that she does not know about yet; while we see that happen a good bit when it comes to her and other characters, it’s a little rare in terms of things that directly pertain to her life.
