‘Homeland’ season 3 spoilers: Meredith Stiehm to co-write finale, return for seasons 4, 5
This story in regards to “Homeland” may be one of the most important headlines that could come out about it … even if it is not receiving the sort of attention that it deserves. Meredith Stiehm, who was behind some of the best episodes of the show throughout seasons 1 and 2, has co-written the season 3 finale with co-creator Alex Gansa. Not only that, but Deadline claims that she will be back for both a fourth and potential fifth season as an executive producer.
Stiehm left the show following season 2 in order to be the co-showrunner on FX’s “The Bridge,” which was in our mind a fantastic addition to the network’s summer lineup. While this new deal will keep her from returning to that gig full-time, she will remain an executive producer along with now-sole-showrunner Elwood Reid, and she will help to pen the season 2 premiere.
In a statement, Fox 21 (the studio behind “Homeland”) president Bert Salke had the following to say about the new deal that secures Stiehm’s presence at the studio, where she can also work on some future projects:
“We’re thrilled to welcome Meredith back, as she’s been an integral part of Homeland from the beginning. She’s a fantastic writer and this deal returns her to this hugely valuable asset as well as allows us to develop with her down the road.”
Given the many missteps and criticism of “Homeland” throughout this season, this move could not have come at a better time. In some ways, it even feels reminiscent of when we saw Bryan Fuller try to save “Heroes” during its third season after being gone for some time, given that he was not the creator of that show, but one of the most important people behind the scenes responsible for helping to turn it into something pretty fantastic. (Sadly, that show was far beyond saving; “Homeland” is not, though it is flawed and at times without any real tension).
