‘Doctor Who’ 50th anniversary special lands BBC America pre-show, aftershow

The latest -Just in case you believed that “Doctor Who” could not get any more exciting on Saturday, know this: The grand 50th anniversary special entitled “The Day of the Doctor” is going to have both a pre-show and an aftershow on BBC America in confunction with the Nerdist brand. If you think back to this past spring, the network aired a Nerdist aftershow following the series and “Orphan Black” that was a ton of fun, and while we’d love to see another one of those soon, this is also worthwhile entertainment.

This special will begin at 2:15 p.m. Pacific time (or 11:15 a.m. for those of you on the West Coast) on the BBC America YouTube Channel, and the network itself will pick it up, as well, starting at 2:30. The special begins at 2:50, and following it at 4:00, YouTube will also have the live aftershow where you can start to digest everything that happened. The show will be hosted by Veronica Belmont, who you are probably familiar with already if you’ve followed geek culture online over the past ten years or so.

BBC America and the other networks around the world are expected this special, which is bringing together both former Doctors David Tennant and Matt Smith alongside John Hurt, Billie Piper, and Jenna Coleman, to be the biggest broadcast in the show’s history. For the American network in particular, we imagine that there are going to be all sorts of massive records broken in total viewers and in the demo. This is the first time that a “Doctor Who” episode has been simulcast, with the reason for this primarily being so that there are no spoilers that come out early, and that everyone who wants to enjoy the special live can. We are curious already if this is something tha twill be considered down the road, given what the reaction to it is of course this time around.

Love this news? We’re going to be your “Doctor Who” hub all week long, so be sure to check back soon for more on that. Meanwhile, click here to see a new video that features Tennant, Smith, and others talking about the show’s legacy.
