‘Homeland’ season 3, episode 8 review: Who was shot, and a return to new heights
Sunday night’s “Homeland” episode was, of course, a big one. This was the first episode since “Tower of David” to actually show any sort of footage at all of Damian Lewis. Brody is back on the show, but what makes this both a little different / surprising is that his return to the universe of the show is something that Carrie Mathison is completely oblivious about for the time being.
It was actually none other Saul who paid Brody a visit inside of his new little prison, with the reason for it being rather complicated. The best way to put this story is that it has quite a bit to do with the new plan of many tiers. This is one that was so secretive, Saul decided to keep it a secret from both Senator Lockhart and Carrie. This is just one step, and the rest of it is going to come from here on out.
But while Saul was making his move and orchestrating Brody’s return, we ultimately saw Carrie deal with a much different sort of problem: A bullet in her shoulder, which came in her direction after she refused orders from Dar Adal and decided to do anything and everything in order to stop her from ruining their hard work and destroying the Bennett operation that was also set up by Saul. The problem? Thanks to what transpired here, there is no longer a way in which for her to seemingly declare Brody innocent. What a strange, reckless action for Carrie to take, but it lines up with all of her other behavior. We actually find her right now to be the most troubling part of the story, given that she seems almost out of place with all of the other planning going on; not only that, but there is still that pregnancy story that is currently frustrating.
Overall, “Homeland” is getting closer to being the show that it once was again … but it’s not there yet. “A Red Wheelbarrow” brought us powerful moments, and also even movement on Saul’s personal life. What we are getting at here is just that Mandy Patankin is amazing, and we would enjoy just watching him and no one else. Grade: B+.
