‘Shahs of Sunset’ season 3 premiere review: An inferno of an invitation
“Shahs of Sunset” fans, your show is back on the air! But was it really the same show that you remember? While the third-season premiere brought us some welcome updates, we also saw the Bravo tradition continue to play out as they tried to make some sort of massive / ridiculous birthday party into a big deal. We get it: These people are rich. The umpteenth time that we see a big party, it starts to lose some of the appeal.
The other issue here? The party was for Lily, who is arguably at this point one of the show’s least interesting characters. There is just something off here chemistry-wise between her and the other members of the cast, especially since the major conflict of the episode surrounded an invitation. Seriously.
On one side, we had MJ, who decided that for whatever reason (as if this was 1995 and you were still getting free trials of American Online in the mail), electronic invitations to a party were not worth responding to. Therefore, she decided to not confirm her appearance until the day before … via a text … when prompted by Reza to try to do so (yes the are talking again… sort of). Lily told MJ that she RSVP’d too late and was not welcome to attend… boom. We see this both ways: It’s understandable for Lily to be ticked off at the thought of having to add another person at the last second, but at the same time, couldn’t you find a way to make it work for the sake of peace? This is one of those “we know it’s difficult” situations that doesn’t have to be turned into a big deal … but it was.
There are two sorts of arguments that can be found for a reality TV show: Ones that are ridiculous in a funny way, and ones that are ridiculously blown out of proportion. This was a latter and a total #RichPeopleProblems story. We just can’t relate to it, especially with the number of outfit changes Lily had that made it feel more like a celebrity wedding then a birthday party.
The story of MJ and her mother was a nice little change from last season, as was seeing GG and Asa trying to start this season off on better footing. This new side of GG is a little startling since it’s such a 180 from last time, and we’ll see just if that sticks. As for Mike, we will offer the following advice: We know pressure is a problem, but if your girlfriend is wanting you to commit to you to the point that she is converting, you might want to seriously think about proposing.
Was the premiere still at least moderately entertaining? Sure, but this is “Shahs of Sunset,” and we want the entertainment to be more on an insane level. This is still the premiere, though, and the preview for the rest of the season makes it feel like there is more excitement on the way. Grade: C+.
