‘American Horror Story’ season 4 official; Ryan Murphy series will return in 2014

American Horror StoryFile this one under “news you saw coming a mile away.” There is no question that “American Horror Story” is a phenomenon for FX. It is not only one of the highest-rated shows in terms of live viewing in the cable network’s history, but it is also a monster when it comes to DVR figures. Along with “Sons of Anarchy,” this show has become a cornerstone of what the network tries to do in forming edgy, original content for adults.

So now, we come to the inevitable. In a statement today, it was confirmed that a 13-episode season 4 will be coming in the fall of next year from executive producers Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk. FX CEO John Landgraf said the following in a statement, which comes across more or less as him just giving himself a massive pat on the back:

“Put simply, Ryan Murphy is a master television producer. Time and time again he reinvents the form. What he, co-creator Brad Falchuk and their producers Dante Di Loreto,Tim Minear, Jennifer Salt, James Wong, Brad Buecker, Jessica Sharzer, Douglas Petrie,Alfonso Gomez-Rejon, Alexis Martin Woodall and the entire production team and cast responsible for the American Horror Story franchise have done is nothing short of extraordinary. Every year, they create a riveting and brilliant new miniseries. AHS: Coven is the best yet, and I have no doubt that the next installment will be even better.”

One thing that we personally find very entertaining about this statement is that Landgraf specifically highlights the word “miniseries,” as though he needs to remind the Emmys that it is okay that the show submits itself in this category year after year. This is one of the reasons for the show’s success, as it continues to get more press every awards season thanks to a smaller pool of competition.

The only mystery that remains now is trying to learn just who else from past seasons of the show is going to be returning to the show moving forward. Jessica Lange, Sarah Paulson, and Evan Peters are close to being locks, but what about Kathy Bates or Taissa Farmiga? There is such a rich array of actors to choose from already, let alone possible new ones to add to the fold.
