NBC’s ‘Community’ season 5 spoilers: ‘Breaking Bad’ creator Vince Gilligan books spot
Does “Community” have some sort of secret mission to try to get every single member of the “Breaking Bad” cast on the show? It is certainly starting to feel more and more that way courtesy of the latest castings.
Already, you knew that Jonathan Banks (Mike) is appearing in a lengthy arc this season as a professor, and this follows a pair of episodes from Giancarlo Esposito (Gus Fring). Perhaps the biggest surprise here is that rather than going after Aaron Paul or Bryan Cranston, Entertainment Weekly confirms that show creator Vince Gilligan is going to guest star on an upcoming episode as a gold digger who typically gets what he wants, and gets involved in some sort of fight between Annie (Alison Brie) and Abed (Danny Pudi).
This is not the first time that “Community” has decided to cast a showrunner in one of their important roles on the series, as “Arrested Development” creator Mitch Hurwitz also has a spot coming up. Who knew that Vince had such an interest in acting? This may just be more of a situation where he is a “Community” fan, and is supporting another great show by appearing on it.
Despite not exactly being a ratings powerhouse, Dan Harmon has gone out to find interesting people to appear this season. John Oliver is returning for an arc, you have Katie Leclerc from “Switched at Birth” fame signing on, “Criminal Minds” alum Paget Brewster making an appearance, and you even have none other than “Firefly” legend and “Community” superfan Nathan Fillion, who will be stopping by for at least a brief role in an episode.
“Community” returns to NBC with new episodes on Thursday, January 2 in its much-familiar “battling ‘The Big Bang Theory'” time slot of 8:00 p.m. Eastern time. That should be plenty of time to round up all of your friends and say that this is a critical season to watch. Abed’s battle cry on the show has long been “six seasons and a movie,” and it would only be appropriate if the show somehow finds a way to make this happen.
