‘The Walking Dead’ season 4: Would proposed spin-off be set in Georgia?

The Walking Dead -There are some reasons to be nervous about the proposed “Walking Dead” spin-off (having too much of a good thing, or it not living up to the original), and there are also some reasons to be excited (new characters, and a chance to tell an independent story free of expectation). These are all great things to discuss, but from a practical standpoint there is one issue that does continually stand out: Where could the series ultimately be set? The obvious answer is to shoot in Georgia since the flagship show is already there, but then you run the risk of giving people more of the same.

Comic creator Robert Kirkman does not speak about whether or not the spin-off would be filmed in Georgia in a chat with TV Guide, but we assume based on his comment that they are heading elsewhere:

“Georgia has become a character in itself on The Walking Dead that is very unique and very visually interesting, so we would want to find a new location that has similar appeal so it can be its own character in the spin-off.”

Given that the settings on this show are so exterior-based, you have to take this as close to proof that they will be going far away, not only from Georgia, but from a place that has a similar climate. Since we’re solutions-oriented here, we have a few suggestions that could still be within a given budget and provide a very different sort of environment.

The Pacific Northwest – You could film in a popular spot in Vancouver, and put the characters through some lush forests and a much cooler climate. Suddenly, these conditions play a role.

The Midwest – You could set the show possible in a North Dakota and film in Calgary; AMC knows that area well thanks to “Hell on Wheels,” and this really would be creating a significant challenge when it comes to climate.

The Mojave Desert – Make the characters really battle the heat and a lack of supplies. There may not be as many zombies there, but survival in itself is difficult.

A major city – There is something appealing about people trying to survive in a much more dangerous, urbanized environment that would have a season 1 vibe to it. But what if they can find a way to stay there and function in a city like Chicago or Los Angeles? We’d say New York City, but everyone goes there. You can also fake major cities easily, as many films have done in the past.
