‘The Vampire Diaries’ season 5, episode 5 review: Who is Katherine’s daughter; who broke up?
“The Vampire Diaries” season 5 made a bold move to air an episode on Halloween, when some of its teen audience may be more interested in candy than actually watching TV. Then, just to make matters all the more interesting, they decided to stack the deck full of all sorts of shockers left and right that it is almost impossible to give all of them the proper weight. Just over the course of this episode alone, there were breakups, surprises, violence, and almost the death of a popular character.
This was not a great episode for Katherine in the slightest. The madness started when she learned that Nadia was supposedly her daughter, and ended with a great question about if she was in hell after Damon gave it a good effort to kill her, only to see her wake back up. Nina Dobrev is pretty much doing everything on this show, and when you consider that there are more doppelgangers out there, that load could increase moving forward.
Speaking of possible deaths, we also have to consider the idea of no more Silas after Tessa did away with him; but, we’ve also come to be so skeptical about the idea of death on this show that we don’t really take everything that we see seriously (especially since the promo for next week shows him alive). The whole doppelganger situation is starting to just get too confusing, and we almost don’t understand why the show doesn’t decide to just go with stories more centered in the present. The death of Megan at Whitmore and the arrival of the new / mysterious Aaron are much more interesting in comparison to these centuries-old people that have far too complicated a history.
The other most interesting storyline right now is the attempt to try and bring back Bonnie with Damon’s help, which was really where at least some of the plan regarding Katherine came from. This is something we’re definitely interested in seeing play out … but over time. We don’t want to rush her back, especially in episodes like this where there was just too much going on.
“Monster’s Ball” was at times a fun episode, but we feel like the show is trying to do too much. Take for example the breakup between Tyler and Caroline, which happened in what felt like a split-second. If that had taken a little more time, perhaps the emotional sting of it would have had more of an impact. Grade: C.
