‘The Vampire Diaries’ season 5, episode 4 review: Bonnie’s tears, Tyler’s arrival, and moving on
You know that you have an interesting episode, though, when the biggest reveal of it is something actually pretty unrelated to Stefan: Elena actually finding out the truth about Bonnie. It was Damon who finally told her after being privy to the knowledge, and it came as Elena was desperate to try and figure out a way in which to use her to fix Stefan.
Suffice it to say, most of the characters did not take the news well once it started to spread like wildfire. Elena cried in Damon’s arms, and Caroline was afraid to start crying in fear that she would never stop.
The scene of Bonnie’s impromptu funeral was the most powerful one of the season, and probably the show’s most-powerful moment since Alaric passed away at the end of season 3. What was particularly striking was just how few people were able to be in attendance of the service, mostly because of how few people were still alive. Stefan doesn’t care anymore, and it was instead just Elena, Caroline, Damon, and Matt who showed up along with Jeremy.
In addition to crying all about the loss of their friend, the funeral ended up also leading to the arrival of none other than Tyler Lockwood. This was particularly intriguing, since Caroline and him have some conversations that they need to have. But with the gang back together, this does finally feel like “The Vampire Diaries” that we have been waiting for. Almost every original character was accounted for (we’re not talking about “The Originals”), and this was a reason to get a little emotional. Grade: B+.
