‘The Vampire Diaries’ season 5, episode 1 review: Silas, Stefan, and a tale of two Paul Wesleys
“The Vampire Diaries” showed us tonight once again that it was not afraid of any sort of big surprises. Rather than trying to ease us into a new story all about what happened with Elena and Damon over the course of the summer, along with introducing us to the world of Whitmore College, they threw us straight into the fire with a number of stories.
The first thing that stood out here was just another reminder that Silas was a bad, bad man. He does not act like a normal vampire, and he doesn’t even consider himself one. Basically he is the snobbiest sort-of-vampire that the world has ever known. He also has an awful streak, as made apparent by his move at the end of the episode to kill Bonnie’s father, while the ghost of the girl was forced to look on with complete and utter horror.
While Elena and Caroline were enjoying their early days in school, their problems were pretty widespread. One of them was simply seeing that their roommate ended up “killing herself” (in quotes for a reason), and then Caroline learned that Tyler Lockwood was going to be deferring his work at college so that he could stay with some werewolves and lend them a helping hand. Elena learned that there was a mysterious connection to her dad through all this … but what she did not know was everything that was really happening in Mystic Falls. Jeremy was expelled, Silas was running around (as he figured out), and Katherine is also back. He doesn’t want her to run back, and thus we have a likely future fight.
Overall, what did you think about this episode of “The Vampire Diaries”? Personally, it was an enjoyable hour of television, and while we missed the Originals (though there was the beginning of a big Matt story here), it was nice to have a little bit of a smaller focus.
