The first sneak peek for Monday night’s “Castle” episode has arrived, and it shows Nathan Fillion and Stana Katic’s characters in what has to be a very different sort of position than what they have been in over the past several years. Specifically, Beckett is now a boss in some ways of many of the other characters, while Castle is more of an accessory than someone lending a helping hand.
The meeting of the characters is in some ways coincidental. In the video below, Castle shows up to the force mostly because he has found a way to try and insert himself into the investigation. Captain Gates (suddenly reappearing after being a ghost for most of this season) appears to be somewhat annoyed by this, given that she no longer believes that there is a need to have any sort of mystery author floating around her precinct. However, we imagine that this annoys her slightly less than having a pair of federal agents (even if one of them is Beckett) arrive to the office and claim that they are taking over the case of a dead former sitcom star.
So what is the reason for the federal government to get involved here? It all comes down to the three words in the title: “Need to Know.” Unfortunately, mostly of these characters don’t need to know what is going on here (Castle included, for now), and they are therefore kept in the dark. As for Beckett’s surprise upon seeing that Rick is already at the scene, she explains that she was planning to tell him later about being in town.
