‘Unforgettable’ season 3 official; CBS renews Poppy Montgomery show in surprise move
Let’s be honest here: Who saw a renewal for “Unforgettable” coming? This was a show that was saved at the 11th hour by CBS for a second season to air in the summer of this year, and the ratings were not exactly phenomenal after “Big Brother.” The only thing that the show had going for it? That it was reasonably consistent, and it gave them something original to air in the scripted department away from “Under the Dome.”
Obviously, the network still felt like they saw enough to bring the show back. Deadline was the first to report today that there has been a third-season renewal for the show, and that it will be back on the air with new episodes starting up in the summer of 2014. The order is ultimately the same as what we saw this summer: 13 more episodes.
What may have been the deciding factor here is simply comparing it to the performance of some other summer series on other networks. It performed slightly better than either ABC’s “Mistresses” or “Rookie Blue,” and they were each brought back for more. We do typically think that CBS has higher expectations, but they were apparently met here and the show has another shot. They may also be thinking about a couple of other factors here in that there is repeat potential with a procedural (plus syndication if it lasts long enough), and the cost may be about right for them following the cast revamp that took place prior to the start of season 2.
