ABC’s ‘Scandal’ season 3, episode 1 preview: Olivia, Fitz, and a bunker

Can Olivia really be a fixer anymore? That is going to be one of the interesting questions that comes out of the “Scandal” season 3 premiere a week from today. For her entire professional career, Kerry Washington’s character has made a name for herself when it comes to taking care of problems, but traditionally, they are not problems that also involve her.

Dealing with something like an affair between herself and the President of the United States is a little bit above everyone’s pay grade. Therefore, desperate times call for desperate measures, right? In the sneak peek below from the premiere, you can see that Olivia has called Fitz into what appears to be a top-secret bunker in order to talk things out, and she apparently broke so much protocol to do so that codes are currently being rewritten. (On another note, is she wearing the same exact outfit that she is in the promo picture above?)

What remains to us the most interesting part of this is that Olivia has asked the least-likely person imaginable to be at this meeting, and to help to smooth things over: Mellie. Yep, that’s the First Lady and the scorned wife that we are talking about here. For whatever reason, the three of them are going to meet up and think of a plan; we don’t know how Mellie is going to contain her rage, but she’s a strategist as much as anything else. She knows that as long as she stays with Fitz, she has the power mostly thanks to what the press tends to think about her in terms of sympathy.
