‘The Newsroom’ season 2 finale review: Will and Mackenzie’s breaking news
Anytime that there is a Presidential election, this is big news; but on the season 2 finale of “The Newsroom,” there was so much more that was at stake here. By the end of “Election Night” (Part 2), we had the opportunity to learn whether or not the a good many people at Atlantic Cable News are going to be able to stay employed longer than just the next few days.
This hour was an excellent way to wrap up the show for the summer, and also answered a number of key questions for us. For one, Will is not seemingly going to be losing his job. After a lengthy discussion with Charlie near the end of this episode, the ACN head realized that it would be mistake to make himself into the fall guy for something that he and the rest of his team didn’t do.
Somehow, though, this came second to the breaking news that Will and Mackenzie are engaged! For the first time, our resident anchor finally decided to actually trust his heart rather than his head, and it produced a gloriously sweet moment as two seasons of tension ended in a kiss. This was enough to make us okay with the suddenness of the moment, or some of the other stories this episode that went on too long (the banter inside of the studio itself, for example). Meanwhile, it also appears that Don and Sloan are closer to being together after she learned that he purchased her book at the auction. (Aw.) While there is no good news for Maggie on the romance front now, she and Lisa’s friendship may actually be getting better again. At least that’s something.
In the end, this episode really could have been a proper series finale for the show in the way that we did see Will and Mackenzie finally be honest about the feelings that they have for each other after all this time. Granted, there are still many loose ends for next year. Don and Sloan are closer to being together, but not fully there yet. Meanwhile, Jim and Maggie still have a ways to go. As for the professional side of things, there is plenty of news out there left to report, and a reputation that still needs to be regained by ACN. At least this great season has us excited about the future, and what could be coming soon for many of the characters that we’ve come to love. A great ending to a much-improved season, if we do say so.
