‘The Newsroom’ season 3: What stories should ‘News Night’ take on next?
Tonight marks the end of “The Newsroom” season 2, which is a season that by and large continues to be greatly improved on… and we say this as someone who was a fan of the original product. Aaron Sorkin has put in some work to try and correct the problems of the original season, and he has given us something that is more complex, and not necessarily reliant on the stories that “News Night” is covering so much as the characters and what is happening between them.
So even though we may now be in a situation where the subject matter really does not matter as much as it once did, the following question still must be asked: What will the organization take on and cover in the new season?
We will start here by taking on the most controversial subject, and saying that we would be surprised if Sorkin does a story about Sandy Hook. It is an emotional story, and given that most of the characters on the show are not parents, we don’t see it being something that the series really needs to tape into in order to draw an emotional story. Instead, we see the story jumping forward to this spring, and the team taking on such topics as the Paula Deen fiasco, the Trayvon Martin trial, Syria (whose use of chemical weapons has drawn comparisons to the Operational Genoa fictional story this year), and the Anthony Weiner story in New York. We were a little surprised to not see much at all about Hurricane Sandy on the show given the New York setting, but since they have already leaped over that in the timeline for the series, we really do not see them backtracking much just for talking about a natural disaster.
What do you want to see “The Newsroom” cover for season 3, and are there any particular stories, whether it be Will and Mackenzie or Don and Sloan, that you want to see featured more? Be sure to share your thoughts below, and click here for a preview for tonight’s finale. We will have more news after it airs on HBO.

The Petraeus scandal is an obvious loose thread.
He sure didn’t leave many relationship threads untied – which made me question a season three…

Boston Marathon, definitely. Wider inaction on gun control, post-Sandy Hook, please, and the recent recalls of legislators in CO, those who voted for rational new laws (my opinion). Also, on Syria, something that considers that President Obama is on track, has behind the scenes pulled off a diplomatic deal with Putin, so Russia will pressure Assad of Syria to moderate their actions, abandon their chemical weapons.
