‘The Bridge’ episode 9 review: Marco’s family matters
While this week’s episode of “The Bridge” on FX was very strong, there was a question that we started to ask ourselves in the closing minutes of this episode: Do we think that the show could have really ended with ten episodes this season? The answer to that is “probably.” Now that the killer does appear to be David Tate, are we stuck in a “rinse and repeat” cycle where he continues to torment Marco by trapping various members of his family?
This week, the victims were his estranged wife Alma and the couple’s children, who were lured out to the middle of nowhere before effectively being tortured by getting trapped in a shack with a grenade attached to her. That’s definitely not the easiest situation in the world to be in, and it took Marco saving her life / possibly reconciling with her to do something about it.
It’s hard to really say much about the story, since it was all about intensity this week more so than depth. There were some great Sonya Cross moments for sure, but it feels more and more like this is becoming Marco’s show given the personal attachment between him and the case at this point. He’s also a complicated character to root for, since his own unspeakable actions (i.e. rabid adultery) is the reason all of this is happening. While the punishment far exceeds anything that he did, we do wonder why he never thought about the impact that his cheating would have on his family until now. We want him to put Hill away, but we also don’t think that Alma should take him back.
The other two stories are some that we really don’t completely get still when it comes to the connection to the rest. Stephen and Charlotte are off doing their own thing, which in the case of the latter meant burying some dead bodies of the people threatening her with the tunnel. It’s not that these stories are necessarily awful, but we would love to have a greater understanding about their relevance if we are going to continue down this road.
