‘True Detective’: First trailer for Matthew McConaughey series to air before ‘Boardwalk Empire’

HBO logoSunday marks the first airing of “Boardwalk Empire” season 4, and it also marks something else rather significant for fans wondering what in the world HBO is going to put with “Girls” early next year: A chance to take a look at “True Detective,” a series that is actually bringing both Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey to TV for at least eight episodes. The first trailer airs prior to the premiere for Steve Buscemi and company.

When it comes to the cast alone, the story is rather intriguing. However, the show’s plot is a little troublesome as it focuses on Rust Cohle (McConaughey) and Martin Hart (Harrelson), two detectives who end up joining forces in some ways while hunting for a serial killer in Louisiana. This case has been around for almost 20 years, meaning that there will be evidence that comes in both from 1995 as well as in the modern day.

The biggest concern we have with this show right now is simply that it feels like America is over serial killers at this point. We’ve had mainstays “Dexter” and “Criminal Minds” for almost a decade each (though the former is ending), and “The Bridge” has introduced another version of a killer case investigated by detectives a la “Se7en.” This season of “The Killing” also had a serial killer front and center, and this is not even including all of the random cop shows that occasionally take on cases of this variety.

Given the time of year in which it airs (which is pretty light in terms of programming), and the simple fact that HBO makes good stuff, we would be willing to give “True Detective” a shot. However, it will be rather irritating if it turns out to be similar to every other show out there a few episodes in.
