‘Tamra’s OC Wedding’ review: Part ‘Real Housewives of Orange County,’ part ‘meh’
Whenever there is a wedding docuseries of any kind airing on TV, unless it involves members of the Royal Family or important political figures, we don’t usually feel that inclined to watch. It’s typically just an event designed for people to be like “look how rich I am!,” and then for us to witness mass paranoia and stress over silly things that really don’t matter at all. It’s even more of a head-desk moment than some of what happens on reality TV more often than not.
But, we’ve always found Tamra Barney entertaining on “The Real Housewives of Orange County.” Sure, she’s rich and loves money, but she stirs the pot and we always appreciate that. There’s a little bit of that edge to “Tamra’s OC Wedding,” as well, as she makes it clear that this event is all about her, and anyone who crosses her is going to have trouble. But, the biggest issue from an entertainment perspective here is simply that there is a reason why so few of these ladies have successful spin-offs: It’s hard for the format to work.
If it were not for the framework of the wedding, this show would be just a ton of wandering around and meeting new faces. Every good show needs a concrete ensemble, which is why we love the cast of the Bravo series as currently constructed. We don’t really know why this needed to be a separate series, save for maybe an attempt for all parties involved to cash in. It’s just hard to care about a number of these people that we have not even met before, especially when we’d rather see Heather Dubrow and some of the other ladies. (The fact that she invited so many co-stars despite the frequent conflicts is pretty hilarious in itself.)
Ultimately, it’s a good thing that this is just a series of specials rather than a full-blown show. There is a specific end point, and we’re just about getting there. We like seeing these housewives act ridiculous and do ridiculous things, but our final real problem with a wedding special is that everyone wants an expensive wedding. The only difference here is that Tamra has the cash to do it.
