‘Dexter’ season 8, episode 8 review: So much for one spin-off rumor…
After watching tonight’s “Dexter” season 8 episode, we are pretty sure that there is one thing you can officially do: Write off any and all talk that there is going to be a spin-off at some point in the near future starring Zach Hamilton. We’ve complained for weeks that the show was turning into “Dexter and Mini-Dexter,” but in reality, he was just part of a larger story to bring us back to where we started: The story of the Brain Surgeon.
You see, Yates wasn’t really the killer as it was so believed earlier the season, and Dexter learned this tonight the hard way when the body of his protegee Zach was left inside of his apartment with the brain cut out. Who is responsible? If you think about the show for a minute, it will probably hit you like a ton of bricks … but just in case it doesn’t, just think of Cassie’s boyfriend. The important thing to note is that if the show does launch a separate one at some point, it will not be starring a younger version of a Dexter type character.
When it comes to ridiculous moves made by Dexter this week, the biggest one is simply letting his own feelings towards Hannah McKay get in the way of things … again. He had an opportunity to let her go and potentially live free, but he could not bring himself to do it. Instead, he continues to put Deb and himself at risk; a selfish move, but Dexter is a selfish killer. The only person who seems to understand his feelings right now is Dr. Vogel, and with her role on the show right now so undefined, that is probably not a very good sign.
Once again, we find ourselves in a similar position where we are concerned about the future of the show. We just don’t understand where the ending is going here, and while Dexter is helping so many others out right now, we don’t get the sense that anyone other than Quinn is really breathing down his neck right now. At this point in the season, that is unusual. We want to be excited about the story, but right now we’re a little lukewarm given that we don’t completely buy into Hannah McKay, and the villain is hardly the Ice Truck Killer or Trinity.

Hannah would make a great spin off…Call it Sunspot Baby…Like The Fugitive only on the run from serial killers and other assorted creeps.

Cassie’s boyfriend?? Seriously?? Vogel is the brain surgeon. I called it episode 2 and this episode confirms it.

If it’s Vogel, then why would she intentionally go to the trouble of placing jars of brain on her front porch and have a frightened look on her face when she knows that no one is watching her? Also, why would she frame Yates, just to put herself within seconds of death. If it wasn’t for Dexter she would have died that night. The fact is that although she has an obsession with serial killers, her personality doesn’t fit that of a serial killer. There are a few candidates, but the clues point to Cassie’s boyfriend or possibly even Vogel’s unknown husband. Otherwise they are completely doing a personality reboot on a current character which would just be way too throwed off.

yeah, she has a connection and I think she’s more involved then we realize but she’s not doing the killings herself. I think she didn’t know who it was at first but has found out and it’s Cassie’s bf who is actually Vogel’s son. Now that she knows she’s not out to kill the Surgeon but assist him in some way.

I agree with you entirely. We don’t know much about Dr. Vogel’s pass except for the fact she had a husband. In the last episode, when Hannah asked Vogel what push her to choose that field in psychopathy, she mentioned that it was an incident in her past that made her choose it.
I say to myself, what if Dr. Vogel had a son who is a psychopath and had kill his father (Dr. Vogel’s husband)? Now, that’s a very good reason to study psychopathy, especially if you got someone in your family who is a psychopath. What if Cassie’s boyfriend happens to be her son?
