‘The Vampire Diaries’ season 5: Are the Ian Somerhalder – ’50 Shades of Grey’ stories over?

Ian SomerhalderIt’s easy to have a mixed reaction to the news ahead. For some, we really know that they wanted to see Ian Somerhalder play the role of Christian Grey in the upcoming “50 Shades of Grey” film series. However, we’re rather relieved to see this story seemingly put to rest, mostly so that the internet can finally stop being flooded with stories without any actual facts.

According to Us Weekly, author E.L. James has told a number of sources that the “Vampire Diaries” star will not be playing the part of Christian, despite an interest that bubbled out of control to the point where he actually had to tell fans to cool it off a little bit online. We don’t think that the campaigns are really the reason for it not working out; instead, we imagine that some of the main issues here are schedule-based above all else.

Remember, Ian is under contract for another season of “The Vampire Diaries” after this one, and production starts in July and runs until approximately late April. There are some hiatuses thrown in there, but not enough time to film a movie. If the producers wanted Ian, they would have to jump through hoops to ensure that he was available in the times in which they wanted, and he would also have to commit to all three movies right away. It’s for this same reason that you can also rule out Matt Bomer, who has a show in “White Collar” with a similarly-demanding schedule.

We’re not a movie site, so there’s little point on getting into a casting profess for a movie that we may or may not ever see; but personally, we think that a lesser-known actor will get the role. When you already have the reputation of the book, you don’t need the allure of a star to convince fans to show up.
