‘Switched at Birth’ season 3 official; more of ‘The Fosters,’ ‘Twisted’ coming soon

Switched at BirthWhile some of you are still mourning the loss of “Bunheads” and “The Lying Game” on ABC Family, fans of a few other shows on the network have something to celebrate today. In a statement, it was confirmed that “The Fosters,” “Twisted,” and “Switched at Birth” are all coming going to be receiving additional episodes.

Of this group, the season 3 renewal for “Switched at Birth” is the least surprising. This is probably the network’s second-most important drama behind “Pretty Little Liars,” and it is also one of the most praised for its portrayal of a young, deaf character and some of the struggles that they go through in a day-to-day environment. We’d be stunned to see it go away at any point before a season 4.

Meanwhile, the return of “The Fosters” and “Twisted” for additional episodes in the spring was something that was not necessarily a given, but largely expected. Both shows fared better than the now-canceled “Bunheads” or “Jane By Design,” and now they get to have the terrible challenge of airing out of season. This is what has doomed many of the network’s canceled shows in the past, as they either suffer due to competition or the younger audience being in school instead. TV is a cutthroat business, and while some cable networks can afford to be a little more lenient when it comes to ratings, it’s difficult for ABC Family when so much of their audience has a shorter attention span and their audiences do not build year-to-year a la “Game of Thrones” or “Breaking Bad.”
