‘Downton Abbey’ season 4 spoilers: Filming begins for Christmas special
Will “Downton Abbey” give fans a Merry Christmas this year? If nothing else, we do very much believe that they will at least not kill off another character again. As understandable as it was that Dan Stevens wanted to move on with his career, he’s also a little bit of a Grinch for choosing that time in which to do it.
Luckily, we do already have some great news about the season 4 dosage of holiday cheer this year: It will be the episode featuring both Shirley MacLaine and Paul Giamatti! Regardless of whether or not the episode brings with it a mountain of drama (and we are pretty sure that it will), this is still news worth having a celebration over.
This news was confirmed by director Jon East, who is preparing for his first-ever installment on this series at the helm doing work for “EastEnders,” “Rocket Man,” and many more. While the man is not exactly able to tweet out spoilers from the episode (which we are certainly fine with, given that we don’t need to be any more spoiled than we already are), he did send a message over to our friends at Downton Abbey Addicts saying that there is quite a bit to look forward to:
“I think all DA fans are going to love this special, it’s a dazzling script.”
Of course, there is will once again surely be that “awkward…” feeling when American viewers catch this episode in either late February or early March, but perhaps they will pull a move from last year and not actually set the special at Christmas. Once filming for this episode is done, the nine episodes for the year will seemingly be accounted for, meaning that many actors will then have the rest of the year to go and pursue some other projects.

I just don’t forgive Dan Stevens for leaving. Selfish move and I think he will regret it.

Unless Sir Anthony Strallan makes an appearance, many of us won’t be pleased!

killing off Mathew was a necessary evil I guess but I don’t like the way it was treated. Mathew was probably , in my estimation, the most significant character in the story. Unlike with Cybil’s death, the audience could not grieve with the characters as we wanted to. Mathew was so loved by all. He was the glue. He was the steady one , the wise and compassionate son in law who could stand up to Robert but not in an arrogant way. He was Toms’ mentor and friend. He was gentle with Mary and firm. He was the perfect compliment to her tendency to be mean and spiteful. He was a defender of the weak. If I were the writer I would have at least given us the viewer to mourn. Cybil’s death was one of the most powerful and well acted scenes in tv drama, right alongside Gus’ death in lonesome dove. If your going to spend all that time to develop a character and have your audience fall in love with him then let the audience experience the pain the characters most assuredly would have felt.
