‘Real Housewives of Orange County’ review: Alexis Bellino and more of the same
Let’s start out our latest take on “The Real Housewives of Orange County” with a long, deep yawn over hearing some of the same stuff time and time and time again. We may need to get plastic surgery just to recover from all of the time wasted that has turned our face into a frown.
First of all, Alexis Bellino. Is it always the same narrative over and over again here? She feels persecuted by the other women, and even when someone gives her a chance (a la Gretchen Rossi), it really does not go as well as anyone would hope. Also, why are all of these women constantly interested in careers that are not as lucrative for them as ways they could be spending their time instead? Say what you will about Vicki Gunvalson and creepy Brooks, but leveraging the show into business is the perfect venture. The only person we want to see acting is Heather Dubrow … mostly because she is, after all, an actress.
There is a part of Lydia McLaughlin this season that we really like, mostly because she is this sort of hybrid housewife / churchgoer creation that doesn’t feel completely artificial and yelling that “God is on her side.” She also acts ridiculous occasionally, which we do appreciate. In between her and Heather and even Tamra Barney’s storylines, we oftentimes now have a pretty great show.
The real thing that we are learning day by day about “The Real Housewives of Orange County” is that maybe, we’re taking this whole show too seriously. Gretchen, Tamra, Alexis, and Vicki will always have conflict; there’s enough history there to fill books, and they’ll make bad decisions to boot. Perhaps so much of our frustration merely comes out of that we do want to see the show evolve more, and while the relationships do, the conflict all seems the same. It’s like having an orange every day for a year, and eventually you get tired of the flavor.
Is there any storyline at this point that you found extremely engaging here? Just in case you want to re-live some of this madness (and maybe you do, we don’t judge), be sure to head on over to the link here.
