America’s Got Talent: Rapper Luke Taleno gets Golden Buzzer

Heading into the America’s Got Talent season 21 premiere we knew there were going to be three Golden Buzzers. Luke Taleno was the final one of the group, and there is certainly a chance we hear a lot more from him on the show moving forward.
We do recognize here that historically, there have not been a lot of super-successful rappers on this show. There have been some, but this is probably the one part of music that has been a little under-represented over the years. Could Luke change that?

First and foremost, let’s just say that we really appreciated how the producers ended up highlighting his story within some of the pre-audition package. We heard about him being a part of the audience in the past, as well as struggles both in terms of his life and his health. Yet, these were not overly emphasized in a way that made us feel sorry for him or drowning in a sea of guilt. Also, we appreciate that he was confident in his abilities and knew he could deliver a great act. There are too many people who come on the AGT stage feeling a little sheepish, and that is something we can get rather tired of pretty fast.
One of the things that was appealing about Luke’s audition was how he was able to use his talent in order to further tell his story and we imagine that moving into the latter rounds of the competition, that could be the case again. With that being said, our sentiment is that he will need to do at least a few other things to make him stand out from the version of the act we have had a chance to see so far. If he can do that, we do think he has finalist upside.
