Is Cynthy Wu leaving For All Mankind? Is Kelly Baldwin dead?

We had a feeling entering the For All Mankind season 5 finale that we could be losing a key character … but Kelly Baldwin? It may take some time to recover from that.
Ultimately, Kelly lost her life in a shocking way after taking part in the mission on Titan — is it a sacrifice for the greater good? Well, that depends on the definition, but we do know that this is a story that is allowing viewers to see the show’s interpretation of extraterrestrial life. Sure, we are mostly just talking about microbes at this point … but it is still life.

Speaking to Gold Derby further about this particular decision, here is some of what executive producer Matt Wolpert had to say:
“We knew Ed was going to die this season — that was always the plan … But Kelly was a surprise to us. I remember when the idea first came up, we were like, ‘We can’t do that; her father just died, that’s crazy!’
“But then the closer we got to the finale, the more it made sense both narratively and emotionally. It’s an appropriate choice for Kelly, because she’s embracing her father’s ‘go for it’ attitude. She’s also the reason that her team is on Titan, so she feels like she should be the person to stay behind. So it felt like the right choice, but it was still a really painful choice.”
Ultimately, we are happy that we got the great story that we did in the finale, even if it stinks to lose Cynthy Wu at this point. The aforementioned article does confirm that Kelly is gone, so this is not one of those situations where she’s still alive simply because we did not see a dead body. That is a common trope that is out there within the TV world at times.
