Criminal Minds: Evolution season 19 episode 2: Luke Alvez’s heartbreak

We knew heading into Criminal Minds: Evolution season 19 that it would be one of the biggest seasons for Luke Alvez in quite some time. However, we did not quite know what it would entail.
Here is a classic rule for the show, though, that dates all the way back to its time on CBS: If you are getting a spotlight, it probably means something terrible is happening to your character. Nobody ever stays happy for an extremely long period of time.

What happened with Adam Rodriguez’s character was actually not clear until close to the end of episode 2. We know that he lost someone dear to him but at the same time, it was not obvious who it was. In the end, though, it was revealed to be Roxy, his beloved dog we were first introduced to years ago. Roxy helped him cope with the aftermath of his military service, and someone who was with him through almost every single high and low. The final scene between the two was gut-wrenching, as Luke thanked her for everything that she did, even helping him make it through some dark periods of his life. This is something that he will be looking to try and pay forward with others.
In the aftermath of all of this, we do have to say that we are still concerned about how Alvez is going to cope. He has not opened up to everyone at the BAU about what he is going through — Garcia knows, and she has been able to help in her own way. Yet, grief is a process that does take some time and by virtue of that, we do not imagine that the story is going to move forward in a way that is easy or direct the rest of the way.
