After what feels like an eternity, a tiny update has finally surfaced when it comes to True Detective season 5 over at HBO. So with that, what have we learned?

Well, for now, let’s just say that the answer to this question is a little bit complicated — while we do not know as to when production is going to start, showrunner Issa Lopez has been working on the story, which is presumably going to be set around Queens, New York. Months ago Nicolas Cage was reportedly in talks to join but per the actor himself, he has still yet to officially come on board.

Speaking in a new interview with Variety tied to the release of Spider-Noir, here is some of what the actor had to say regarding the HBO show:

“I have no idea. I think they’re working on the material, but I haven’t heard about it in quite some time. I’m not signed on to anything; we’re just talking … I like Issa López a lot, and would be thrilled to work with her, but nothing is concrete.”

The longer we wait for more concrete news on True Detective season 5, the more we wonder if the show is going to be able to launch in 2027 at all. That is something that was discussed as a possibility a good while back but obviously, that was probably under an assumption that filming would be underway by now. Television is often a pretty fluid thing, and that is especially the case when you are dealing with an anthology like this, one that allows for each season to be its own individual thing.

Hopefully, we will at least get some more final clarity on this situation by the time we get around to the summer.
