True Detective season 5 premiere date: A May 2026 update

Is there a chance we are going to hear something more about True Detective season 5 between now and the end of May?

Of course, we certainly understand that there is a desire for more of the show and for good reason. We also thought that we’d be hearing more news about production by now. After all, it was first reported last year that filming is going to be taking place in New York, and that Nicolas Cage was in talks to be the next lead. Since that point, almost dead silence.

Are we a little bit surprised by all of this? Absolutely, especially when you consider that there was no showrunner change heading into season 5 and that Issa Lopez as reportedly still on board as the boss of the series. Then again, everyone behind the scenes may still be working here with a singular goal in mind: Perfection. From their vantage point, there may not be any hurry to rush anything along here so they they make sure that season 5 is every bit as good as what came before it.

We have known for a little while now that the plan is for True Detective to return at some point in 2027 and as far as we can tell, there is no reason at present to suggest that this is about to change. If we get any news on the show at all this month, we will consider ourselves lucky. If we do, it will probably be either something tied to casting or the start of production. After all, even if Cage does happen to be confirmed as the next lead, there are still a number of other roles to be filmed as this version of the anthology gets filled out.
