For most of the past few months, one of the hot rumors related to Doctor Who was that we were going to be seeing the next Doctor arrive come Christmastime. We recognize that Ncuti Gatwa’s iteration of the character seemingly regenerated into Billie Piper. However, at no point was she credited as the Doctor, fueling speculation that the producers may have some additional trick up their sleeve.

However, are we about to be stuck waiting a little while longer to see the final payoff here? That at least feels possible at present.

According to a report from The Sun, there is a good chance that this upcoming Doctor Who special ends up being delayed until Easter as the powers-that-be continue to search for the right person to be the next lead. We recognize that there are a lot of reset components at the heart of the show at this point. Take, for example, that Disney+ is no longer involved, meaning that there could be some changes regarding the budget. We also imagine that with a new Doctor will come a new Companion — you could include recent ones if you ant, but we tend to view the new era as starting anew on some level.

No matter what happens, the only thing we can count on is that the Doctor will return. This is a character who has survived for decades and our feeling is that the biggest thing that really needs to change are the expectations. This may not necessarily be one of those shows that needs to shatter ratings records; it was in so many ways at its best when it was an under-the-radar hit watched by a small but extremely loyal group of viewers. We are not that sure there needs to be a real desire to shift beyond that.

What are you hoping to see moving into this upcoming Doctor Who special?
