Half Man episode 6 spoilers: The path to finale, deadly end

As so many out there are acutely aware at this point, Half Man episode 6 is going to be the all-important finale on HBO. There is still a great deal to unpack here, mostly in that we know already how it all ends: With Ruben being carted away. He seemingly dies, but how did we get there?

The last we saw at the end of episode 5, Niall took a reprieve from his wedding to speak privately with Ruben. Whatever happens from there is, to put it bluntly, catastrophic. Could Richard Gadd’s character attack him? Is something else in play here? Would these two characters be in a much better spot if they never were around each other at a certain point?

Ultimately, these are questions that Gadd does want you to think about, based at least on his comments to TV Insider:

“I suppose it goes to the heart of whether someone can change. It’s that age-old thing, whether somebody is capable of change. Are people capable of fundamental, 180[-degree] change in their lives? … I do believe in redemption for people, for human beings. And I think there is a great tragedy in the fact that maybe, just maybe, Ruben would have turned his life on slowly, lived this really content life with Mona, had Niall not re-entered his world. But I guess it’s all speculation. I think fundamentally at the heart of Ruben, which I suppose speaks to the great tragedy of his journey, is that he does have a desire to be good. He does have a desire to have a child and look after that child, and bring it up correctly. I think he does, fundamentally, for all of his faults. At the heart of his struggle is someone with a desire to be a provider and look after people. And I think that motivation could have maybe carried him all the way through his life in a very happy way. But sadly, these two characters didn’t escape one another.”

Ultimately, the big question mark that remains entering the finale is whether or not Niall can move forward from all of this … or what consequences will be coming his way. For now, none of this is presently clear.
