The Boys series finale: Show creator on Homelander death

We went into the series finale of The Boys firmly expecting that there were going to be some enormous deaths that took place. With that, what did we get?
Well, one part of it did feel fairly inevitable here: The death of Homelander. After Kimiko was able to drain him of his powers (with a vision of Frenchie along the way), he ended up on the ground and groveling for his life before Butcher administered a series of final blows.

Given that the span of time from Homelander losing his powers to his death was extremely short, did the writers consider making it any longer? Well, speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, creator Eric Kripke noted that there were some considerations there:
We thought about it. There’s a flaw to that, which is he could just take V again. Just because they take away his powers doesn’t mean that it would be permanent. You can’t actually let him walk out of that room, because he’s just one shot of V away from being back. Then it was all for nothing. But we wanted that experience — we wanted the audience to have a taste of how pathetic this guy is, and weak, once you take away all of his bluster.
Ultimately, a lot of characters on the show did have a chance to move on, at least when it comes to some of our heroes. Hughie and Annie are expecting a baby, Kimiko has a way to honor her love, and Ryan is now off with Mother’s Milk.
Was this a polarizing final season in a number of ways? Sure, but at the same time, we were happy with some of what we did end up getting in the finale. We just wish that there was more setup in the earlier part of the season.
