Is Harry Shum Jr. leaving Grey’s Anatomy after season 22 finale?

Following the recent season 22 finale of Grey’s Anatomy on ABC, have we seen the end of the road for Harry Shum Jr. as Blue Kwan?
Well, first and foremost, let’s just start off with a reminder that the end of last season, the medical drama made it abundantly clear that the character’s future was in jeopardy at the hospital. However, at the same time the Grey Sloan lost both Teddy and Owen, so is there really value in removing someone else from the equation?

Well, for the time being, let’s just say that not even Shum himself knows what lies ahead for him! Speaking via E! News, here is what the Shadowhunters and Glee alum had to say on the subject:
“I wish I knew. I am just as much in the dark as audiences, but to me, it’s the hope of, ‘Do audiences want to see him go or do they want to see him go back to the hospital?’
“It’s not fully up to the audience … It’s up to the writers and Disney. But also, I think it’s good to see the doctors make mistakes, but also with good intentions. It wasn’t just because he was a bumbling mess. He was very motivated in making sure that someone got to be able to choose life over death.”
Ultimately, we do think that this will be figured out over the next several weeks. Shum mentioning Disney in his comments does serve as a reminder there are also financial reasons why someone stays / does not stay on a show. Grey’s Anatomy is still popular, but its live viewership is not near where it was in the past. By virtue of that, we are in a situation where there could always be a need to cut costs. (Then again, aren’t the producers doing this already here?)
