Half Man episode 3: Ruben & a wedding reception speech…

We are pleased to report that in terms of quality, Half Man episode 3 is as exceptional as the two that came before it. The Richard Gadd miniseries continues to cement its status as one of 2026’s most compelling works, a story about toxic masculinity that is haunting, intense, and accurate to the human experience.
Unfortunately, for the character of Niall it is also heartbreaking to the highest degree. We’re not sure how you view the end of this episode and think anything otherwise.

First, however, let’s backtrack to the hour’s pivotal moment: The trial, where Niall initially lies on the stand and claims that Alby groped Ruben before the violent onslaught began. He was pressured by much of his family leading to that moment, including multiple threats from his brother. Everyone insisted that Ruben had “changed,” but had he at all? We do think that there are multiple parts of this person shown — he may be capable of good with his volunteer efforts, but also still vindictive and warped when it comes to his perception of family and his own identity.
When Niall changed his mind on the stand and told the truth about Alby, you could see the sense of freedom on his face — but also the fear. Ruben tried to attack him, and we tend to think that in that moment, Alby had a chance to see Niall’s full moral compass. This moment of truth is clearly what propelled their own relationship, and likely much of his own sense of professional self-confidence. The problem now comes with the end of the story, with Ruben now at the wedding reception, ready to deliver his speech. How can you not worry that he is about to destroy his brother on the most important day of his life?
