Half Man episode 4 spoilers: Niall, Ruben in the present day

As we do prepare to see Half Man episode 4 on HBO, one thing does appear to be abundantly clear: The story is shifting. For the first three episodes, we spent the bulk of the time in the past, working to understand the dynamic between Niall and Ruben. All of this culminated in the courtroom, where Niall decided to not lie on the stand to save his brother from prison.

Now, the show is finally going to leap into the present. We saw Niall and Alby can married, but the problem is that after so many years, Ruben is there. Why? What does he want, after causing so much pain and heartbreak? This is the story that is about to be told.

Decades later, Niall’s world is rocked by word of Ruben’s possible return. As Niall becomes consumed by Ruben’s new life, obsession takes hold, and their reunion erupts into a violent confrontation that forces both men to face the wreckage of their past.

Episode 3 ended with that huge cliffhanger where Ruben was about to give his speech. We tend to think the next question is quite simple: Is there more to the story than what we know? Or, is Ruben just so broken that he refuses to view the world as it really is? We imagine that from his vantage point he just feels betrayed, broken, and that nobody has his back — but that may be a refusal by him to take responsibility for his own actions. So much of the Richard Gadd miniseries has been about toxic masculinity and the ripple effect that it has on others. We have a hard time envisioning that changing through the remainder of the season.
