Shrinking season 4 spoilers: Is Jeff Daniels returning?

We know that heading into Shrinking season 4 that we are going to be seeing all of the major cast members from the first three seasons back. With that, what more can we say about some recurring players at the same time?

One of the big ones we want to see back at this point is Jeff Daniels as Jimmy’s father Randy, and for good reason. While there were a lot of major plots tied up neatly in the season 3 finale, the same cannot be said here for this one. Jason Segel’s character still has some significant issues to deal with here, mostly due to how his dad never was present for anything important. He always prioritized himself over others, and there is a longer conversation to be had on this.

Speaking in a new interview with Deadline, executive producer Bill Lawrence had the following to say about leaving the Randy door open:

“If we thought we were going to be done after the third season, we would have resolved that [thread] in some way positive or negative [in] the third season … One of the things that was really tricky for us is, we all realized how much fun we were having making the show, and Apple — very nicely — was like, ‘Why are you stopping? We’d love for you guys to keep doing this.’ [So] we had to put in some stories — so it doesn’t feel completely new — that will still be told when we get to come back up and do it.”

For now, we do think there will be room to dive further into Randy, though how exactly that happens remains to be seen. There could be a time jump heading into the fourth season, and many characters may not be remotely close to each other geographically.
