‘Ray Donovan’ episode 3 preview: The next challenge, a threat, and a fight

After watching the second episode of “Ray Donovan,” one of the biggest letdowns was feeling like spending all of this time building up the story for something pretty amazing to happen with an Abby – Ray confrontation, and then not getting it at all. The drama over her inexplicably taking her children with them to Malibu with Ray’s father Mickey was completely left out, and saved until this next upcoming episode.

Before we get into what could happen, an additional thought popped into our head about the episode we just watched since writing the review: Isn’t Ray to blame for this situation? If he was not completely honest with his family about everything Mickey has done, maybe they have formed a false impression that he is a better man than actually is. There’s still so much here that needs to be explored, but we’re not writing that off as a possibility.

As for next week’s stories, in addition to this confrontation we are going to have a Hollywood story that involves Ray somehow working to buy up all of basic rights to a kid phenom that is referred to as the “black Justin Bieber.” Do we expect to still see Scott and some of the other faces? Sure, mostly because they have a knack for getting themselves into trouble.

Meanwhile, we’re also about to have an opportunity to see Ray possibly set Mickey up for cash, or at least consider it. This is what really makes this show so complicated: Ray’s clearly a better guy in some ways than Mickey, but he still has some things in common with him that he’d probably not want to admit.
