Doctor Who season 16: Could it be coming to HBO Max?

Is there a chance that Doctor Who season 16 could be heading to HBO Max as a streaming partner? Well, we do at least know this: There are reasons to think it could make sense. There is somewhat of a history with the streamer having old seasons, and we do also know that this is a place that does tend to acquire content and collaborate with other people.

In particular, know that HBO in particular has a history of working with the BBC — they partnered with them on a huge hit in Industry, and that is without mentioning His Dark Materials or some others from the past several years.

So could a collaboration come to pass? Speaking to the Radio Times, HBO’s own Casey Bloys suggested that nothing is imminent — at least for now:

“It has not been presented to us … As with anything, I would say ‘Never say never’ – it’s just not something that I know about.”

One of the biggest arguments we would make for Doctor Who existing under the HBO umbrella, at least for some international markets, is that it is home to so many other franchises. You’ve got all of DC Comics there, plus the Game of Thrones universe, everything Dune, and due to the recent Paramount deal, Star Trek is there as well. We do think that a new version of the British fandom would work rather well there, but we do think that some final decisions could come down to finances — and the Paramount deal may need to be hammered out before anything is thought of as certain. (In other words, let’s just repeat the familiar refrain that you could be waiting a while.)
