NCIS season 23 episode 12: Is Mateo really McGee’s son?

We certainly came into NCIS season 23 episode 12 expecting something big and life-changing for Timothy McGee. What we left with ended up being one of the best performances for Sean Murray so far, and also a shocker that surpassed even our wildest expectations.

As it turns out, Olivia Garcia is more than just an ex-girlfriend of the NCIS agent; she is also the mother of his 18-year old son Mateo. Tim put together the timeline the moment that he learned about Mateo’s age and from there, took a paternity test that eventually proved he was the dad.

So why did Olivia keep it from him? After she was eventually rescued close to the end of the episode, she indicated that she did not learn about the pregnancy until after they split and from there, she could never the right way to tell him … and it got harder and harder the longer time passed. McGee has every reason in the world to be shattered by this, given that he takes great pride in being a father and Mateo spent his childhood without a dad around. He vowed that he is going to be there moving forward in just about every way that he can, and Olivia seems to be okay with that.

The crazy thing about this episode is that this is one of two enormous game-changers we heard about in the closing minutes, with the other being that NCIS as an agency is getting shut down. This was confirmed in a conversation between Vance and Parker, where the former indicated that he has been working tirelessly to ensure that they would be okay with changes coming from the higher-ups. Unfortunately, all of that seems to be for naught — at least at present. Can that change? We’ll have to wait and see…
