‘Doctor Who’ season 8: Is this a 50th anniversary teaser, or something else entirely?

Doctor Who“Doctor Who” was clearly feeling in a pretty mysterious mood on July 4, given that the BBC series released what has to be one of their most cryptic teasers to date.

This video does not feature any physical character onscreen, and is notable mostly by narration, paintings, and a set of glasses. The obvious implications from most of this are that we are talking about the Fourth Doctor in Tom Baker, which is highlighted all the more by the hashtag #thefourth appearing at the video’s end.

But what could this video be hinting at? There are a few strong possibilities:

1. Baker’s Doctor having some sort of surprising presence in the 50th anniversary special airing on November 23.

2. A look into the show’s history as a way to help promote the upcoming BBC Two biopic about the early days of the series, which has lost many of its older episodes over the years.

3. Some sort of promotion for a boxed set, or some other merchandise related to Baker’s iteration of the character.

No matter what the intention here by the BBC, it is clear that they have come up with a pretty intelligent clip in that they managed to have a number of diehard Whovians talking, even if they are not quite sure what they are even talking about right now. Then again, it is just nice to have something out there related to the show that does not have to do with the departure of Matt Smith, and the speculation over who could be the 12th Doctor starting with season 8.
