The Amazing Race 39 premiere date: The best-case scenario

Given that this week marks the return of Survivor with an epic season 50, it makes a lot of sense to think about the future of another CBS hit in The Amazing Race. So what is going on here?

Well, first and foremost, here is a reminder that the network has already renewed the Phil Keoghan hosted reality competition show for another batch of episodes. Not only that, but it has already been filmed! You could argue here that it makes total sense for the network to air it as soon as possible, but this spring, CBS is programming a new show in America’s Culinary Cup to air after Survivor. This leaves the Race on the shelf for the immediate future.

So what is realistic at this point for The Amazing Race 39? We may not like to admit it, but the best-case scenario here is likely September. We suppose you can argue that if Culinary Cup tanks in some terrible way it could replace it on the schedule, but that’s not something we see a strong possibility of at this point. CBS likely knows it needs some fresher reality concepts on the schedule, and they have never been able to find something within the cooking space.

We tend to think here that the place for season 39 is rather similar to what we had for season 38, where it will air in 90-minute chunks after the Jeff Probst hosted show airs season 51. We’re not sure if we will ever go back to there being two seasons in a year — while we do think the Race is still popular, it does not have enormous ratings. Meanwhile, it also does not always have the same big, iconic moments that you get on some of CBS’ other competition shows.
