A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms season 1: An Emmy surprise?

For most of the past two weeks, we have wondered if HBO’s A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms could serve as a darkhorse contender at the Emmys. However, we thought that under the thinking that it could be submitted as a comedy.

Does the show work in that category? We would easily argue yes. There are moments of humor within every episode and if a show like The Bear can enter the comedy category, why couldn’t the Game of Thrones prequel? The competition in that group is lighter this year, with Hacks being one of the major contenders.

Without further ado, let’s just get to the surprising news here. According to Gold Derby, the plan for the network is to submit A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms as a Drama, despite the abbreviated run times for its six episodes. That means that it will face a much harder time garnering nominations. The Pitt is likely to clean up again for its second season, though it does have heavy competition this year. Another HBO show in Task is sure to get plenty of love, Slow Horses is always a favorite, and do not be surprised if Pluribus becomes a frontrunner thanks to the credentials of Vince Gilligan and the quality of season 1 overall.

It is true that Seven Kingdoms has been excellent this season, and so much stronger and consistent than we ever anticipated. However, we are worried that the heavy competition and the shorter episodes could leave it standing in the metaphorical cold. In the end, consider all of this a reminder that Emmys do not mean everything, especially when there are so many different shows that have been snubbed in a big way in the past.
