Outlander season 8 spoilers: EP on multiple endings being filmed

There are a number of great pieces of lore out there about Outlander season 8, but one tends to stand out to us the most: The fact that there are multiple endings that were filmed back at the end of production.
What was the point of that? Well, there were several — preserving secrecy was one, but at the same time, it gave executive producer Matthew B. Roberts more options to work with. It also means that a lot of people, including some of the show’s cast, are still very much in the dark on how the series actually ends. In a way, this is bizarre, but also adds another layer of stakes to the final season. Add to this also the fact that the ending of the show is going ahead of Diana Gabaldon’s books — this is one of the few times in the entire series that TV show and book fans are largely on the same page (pun intended) heading into the series finale.

Speaking about the conclusion to Entertainment Weekly, executive producer Matthew B. Roberts explained further the intentionality in his filming strategy:
“There’s a small handful of people that have seen it all the way through … I think keeping it close to the vest and a surprise to a lot of people made it a little more special … They all could have been the ending, and that’s why people believed them [when they were filmed].”
In other words, we don’t think any of these endings are just silly or random. We do wonder if the alternate endings could eventually be released on a DVD / Blu-Ray set down the road, but that’s likely a question for some stretch of time after the finale airs. For now, just remember that season 8 of Outlander will be here on March 6.
