We recognized fully heading into Super Bowl LX that there is no performance out there as critically assessed as the National Anthem. By virtue of that alone, it would hardly be a surprise if many out there opted out of singing it altogether.

Nonetheless, this year it was Charlie Puth’s opportunity to try and deliver something big with “The Star-Spangled Banner” prior to the start of the game. So how did he deliver?

We know that there were some people out there surprised that Puth was chosen to perform the song in the first place, but we do tend to think that he delivered a soothing version while also playing the piano at the same time. There were some big notes at the end, but he also knew when to cut them off. We recognize that one of the biggest criticisms people get during the Super Bowl is that they try to make the song too much about themselves; we do not think that was the case here.

What was somewhat funny is that in the aftermath of what he did on stage, most of the internet was just filled with the Taylor Swift lyric “We declared Charlie Puth should be a bigger artist.” We may not be fully aware of modern-day meme culture but at the same time, we do tend to think that this is praise?
