Is Rebecca Gethings leaving Call the Midwife after the events of this week’s episode, and is Sister Veronica gone for good?

Well, for the time being, let’s just say that there is no clear question as of now. The character is going away from Nonnatus House for the next six weeks, largely so that she can assess her future and determine whether or not she wants to remain with the Order. If she feels like this is the right move for her, it is certainly understandable. However, at the same time it may be a hard thing for viewers to digest.

We do think that the Veronica storyline is at this point indicative of the changing times of this particular era, as the Order has to figure out how to adapt. Meanwhile, people are still trying to find their place in a society with different norms than before. One of the things that is important to remember about Call the Midwife as well is that it has long been a fluid series. While there are some characters who have been there from the start, there are many others who have come and gone over time. This happens in life, so why wouldn’t it transpire in a show that tries to reflect that?

For now, just know that there is no public confirmation that Veronica is gone for good, and we would not be shocked to see her return to at least announce her decision after this span of time. The unfortunate reality here, though, is that she is not really tethered to Poplar much beyond the Order — if she does choose to leave, it is easy to imagine her being gone for good.
