‘Downton Abbey’ season 4 spoilers: Ready for some Lily James – Gary Carr scoop?

Remember when we teased that Gary Carr’s Jack Ross could find himself involved in some sort of romantic subplot on the fourth season of “Downton Abbey”? When we first heard of this story being teased, we were nervous about whether or not we should read something as simple as a boat trip into a sign that there could be a romance blooming between the show’s first-ever black character and Lily James’ character Rose. Such assumptions are dangerous, and can lead you down an embarrassing rabbit hole.

However, it now at least somewhat feels like ITV themselves have given us some sort of license to explore what could be happening when it comes to these characters in the future. Speaking to Entertainment Weekly in a new interview, show executive producer Gareth Neame had the following to say on the subject of whether or not there could be a romance in the cards soon when it comes to these two characters, and he certainly did not deny the chatter:

“We know she’s a bit of a wild child, right? She’s a bit rebellious, and she likes the boyfriends.”

But will Robert and the rest of the Downton Abbey residents approve of her being with a jazz musician, especially one of a different race? Modernization has created subtle waves on the show over the years already, and this is one of the biggest leaps that the show has taken towards class mingling and equality. We’re sure that there will be some resistance depending on how long these two characters stay together, mostly because resistance seems to a near-constant on this show in the first place.
