Landman season 2 episode 9: Has Tommy been fired?

This weekend Landman season 2 episode 9 arrived on Paramount+ with the goal of really drumming up some excitement for the finale. Did it achieve that? Well, that answer is a little complicated, and also probably based on what exactly you are watching this show in order to see.
Let’s just start off here by noting the one part of the story that is worthy of some major discussion: The fact that Tommy Norris has been let go of M-Tex, mostly because he is not looking to take some of the risks that Cami is fighting for at this point. We view the situation at present as one where she is not seeing the forest through the trees, where she is caught up in the rush of the job and refusing to acknowledge the idea that the very thing she is chasing is now the thing that helped kill her husband.

As for Billy Bob Thornton’s character, there are two different ways in which the story could go. There is an argument here that Cami is going to recognize the error of her decision and bring Tommy back. However, you could argue that we’re setting up a storyline here where he legitimately goes on his own and tries to change things up for his future — which honestly would be really appealing at this point in the series’ run. Could he do something more with Cooper? Granted, his son has a lot on his plate at this point after doing what he had to in order to be there for Ariana.
Now, the less time we spend on the Ainsley storyline the better, as this has to be in contention for worst storyline of the year. Rather than trying to do anything nuanced at all with a non-binary character, Taylor Sheridan just creates the most stereotypical archetype he can for a story that seems totally devoid of nuance.
